The Frontier Historical Society was founded in 1964 by a group of citizens interested in preserving local history. Originally operated by a volunteer staff, the Historical Society Museum now employs a full-time director, a registrar, and an assistant director. Located at 1001 Colorado Avenue in Glenwood Springs, the Museum collections are presently housed in the former home of Churchill and Stella Shumate, who donated the house to the Historical Society in 1971.
The Museum's collections include artifacts from the late 19th, early 20th centuries, archives relative to Glenwood Springs settlement and history, an extensive photo collection, and a small library. Research can be done in the archives by appointment only, and for a research fee of $5.00. Photos in the collection are available for reproduction, for a price, and with the express permission of the Historical Society. Appointments can be made for viewing and choosing photos for reproduction.
The Museum is open during summer hours from the beginning of May until the end of September, Monday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
During the months of September through April, the Museum is open Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
