Bicycling has always enjoyed an enthusiastic following in Colorado and Glenwood Springs is no exception to that. The centerpiece of cycling in our area is the much publicized Glenwood Canyon bike path which travels 16.5 miles through the length of scenic Glenwood Canyon, along the banks of the Colorado river. Various other road rides are also available for both the serious rider and a family out for fun.

When people think of Bicycling in Colorado, they think of mountain bikes last. The Crown Jewel of mountain bike rides in Glenwood Spring is the Scout Trail. This can be done as an out and back single track ride from town but requires a steep, technical climb from the outset. Another option is to circle around the gentler southern slope of lookout mountain on gravel and dirt country roads to reach the top of the trail (allow an average of two hours for the climb ). You can also shuttle a car to the top and just do the downhill portion (if you are one to cheat).

Whatever option you choose, once you reach the top be prepared for a finger cramping, bouncing descent down the west face of the mountain. The views are far-reaching and dramatic, but stopping to look around at the consequences of missing a turn can be significant to fatal. Several places along the way feature serious exposure. At horse shoe bend the trail comes within 10 feet of a thousand foot sheer drop to the Colorado river. A heads up rider who stays within his or her limits of control will have no problems.

Expect 30 minutes to an hour and a quarter for the descent depending on your down hill prowess.

Less technical, but no less rewarding is the ride to the cross atop Red Mountain. This faces the Scout trail from the opposite side of the valley. The ride climbs the dirt service road for the long defunct Glenwood Springs ski area. Several of the old lift towers are still there but the chairs are long gone. In places some of the old cables can be found lying about. The approach up the hill for the first half mile is a little daunting, but don't despair, the grade gets much gentler just past the water tower. About 2/3 of the way up you will come to a bench and a terrific view of Mt. Sopris and Capital Peak in the Elk range. Continue on to the top and you will come to a gate. Don't cross it that's a private property line. Instead follow the fence line to the left about 100 yards to another great overlook and then return to home the way you came up.

The Forest Hollow ride is a variation of the Scout Trail. This is a nice rolling traverse along the upper south side Glenwood Canyon, cutting through thick stands of spruce. It is barely passable before mid to late May and often muddy before June. This trail starts about midway up the Scout Trail and can be part of a large loop by connecting with 4x4 roads or done as an out and back. Sections are choked with scrub oak so expect a few minor scratches to arms and legs. Its also possible to use this to access the road to Hubbards Cave but be prepared with plenty of food and water. This is a serious 4 to 6 hour round trip if you choose the extra miles.

Glenwood Springs is also centrally located in relation to other cycling destinations. Crested Butte is a short one and a half to two hour drive to the south and east over McClure and Kebler passes ( summer only ). Aspen offers a wide variety of cycling opportunity and is only 45 minutes up the Roaring Fork Valley. Other excellent rides are to be found at Rifle, 30 miles west; Fruita, 1 hour and a half west; Redstone\Marble 45 minutes to an hour south; or Moab, UT, 3 1/2 hours west. So if you find yourself passing our way up at Glenwood, take a ride or two, and soak in the Hot Springs Pool. Heck, make a day of it!
