  July 23, 1860 Captain Richard Sopris discovered the Hot Springs.

1879 James Landis was first to settle in Glenwood Springs and first owner of the Hot Springs.

Around that same time, Isaac Cooper came to the area by way of Aspen. Cooper dreamed of a resort for the Hot Springs.


1883

1880 Carbonate was settled by miners on the Flat Top Mountains.

1881 Fort Defiance was set up at Grand Springs, now Glenwood Springs.

Sept. 4, 1881 Ute Reservation lands in Western Colorado open to entry and settlement.
Feb. 10, 1883 Garfield County established and Carbonate named county seat.

Aug. 25, 1885 Glenwood Springs incorporated and plotted. Town plat filed with county clerk of Summit County. Mrs. Isaac Cooper changed the town name from Defiance to Glenwood Springs for her hometown in Glenwood, Iowa.
1885 Presbyterian Church established.
Ute Chief and Glenwood Echo established.
1886 Glenwood Electric Company was organized by Walter B. Devereux with British investors.
March 12, 1887 First National Bank opened with James L. Hageman, President; Walter Devereux, Vice President; J. H. Fesler, Cashier.
Oct. 5, 1887 Denver and Rio Grande Railroad came to Glenwood Springs on a narrow gauge bed.
Nov. 8, 1887 John "Doc" Holiday died of consumption in Glenwood Hotel.
Dec. 2, 1887 Isaac Cooper died.
Dec. 12, 1887 Colorado Midland Railroad came to Glenwood Springs.

Walter B. Devereux

1887 Weekend laundry trains came from Leadville bringing miners down to bathe and do laundry in the Hot Springs and enjoy Glenwood's red light district.
Glenwood Hook and Ladder Company formed which gave way to Isaac Cooper Company #1 and Rough and Ready Hose Company #2. Fires were considered big events and bets were placed on which team would arrive first. Both companies were also social organizations, holding dances, dinners and picnics.
Cardiff Townsite filed.
Christian Church established.
Glenwood National Bank established.
Population increases to over 2,000.

1888 The Natatorium and Pool, fed by the Hot Springs, were completed.
Colorado Midland Railroad and the Denver and Rio Grande extended to New Castle. Denver and Rio Grande converted to standard gauge tracks.

1890 Stone Bathhouse completed and Vapor Cave #3 added to health spa complex.
April 25, 1891 Von Rosenberg's bridge across the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs dedicated.
1892 An entire passenger train was buried in Glenwood Canyon by snow for two days.
May 3, 1893 Hotel Colorado completed.
June 10, 1893 Hotel Colorado opened to the public.
1893 Glenwood Racing and Polo Club established by Walter Devereux.
